A preliminary programme has just been released our upcoming conference: 'Zero Bound on Interest Rates and New Directions in Monetary Policy', to be held on October 7th and 8th 2011, at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario.
This conference, (co-sponsored with the Rimini Centre for Economic Analysis in Canada) will explore many of the issues that have arisen following the global financial crisis, economic slowdown and the resulting responses by central banks. Topics to be discussed include:

A new commentary by Dr. Frank Millerd highlights some of the impending issues related to climate change in the Arctic, focusing on fisheries and the need for international coordination and cooperation. This short article is accessible to non-academics and can be downloaded free here.
The latest edition of our 'Labour Market News' quarterly bulletin shows national and provincial unemployment declining, with job creation across all industries in the Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo area. The newsletter, which is published by the Laurier Centre for Economic Research and Policy Analysis (LCERPA), also contains a special feature on the effects of the business cycle on seniors' health, reporting results of a recent study in Canada - results that differ from similar studies in the U.S.

LCERPA Research Fellow Randy Wigle and co-author Trien Nguyen have been feathured in the April 18th edition of the Globe and Mail newspaper. The article, entitled "Border Delays Cost Canada up to $30 Billion a Year" (click here to download) highlights research by Nguyen and Wigle, in which they use a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model to estimate the total costs of delays as goods such as auto parts criss-cross the Canada-US border. Their work, which has been published in the journal Canadian Public Policy, is related to a research paper and presentation Dr. Wigle made at an LCERPA organized workshop on Transportation 'gateways and corridors' held in Toronto last summer. In June, LCERPA hosted international experts in Transportation for a research workshop on the topic of Canada's 'Gateways and Corridors'. The event welcomed acadmic researchers, industry practitioners and government agencies to discuss issues ranging from infrastructure investments and trade flows to environmental impacts and public private partnerships. WATERLOO - The Laurier Centre for Economic Re-search and Policy Analysis (LCERPA) today announced the launch of Labour Market News, a first in a quarterly series of bulletins designed to provide expert economic viewpoints of labour market trends and policy issues.The first issue will focus on retirement trends with subsequent issues covering topics such as summer employment, minimum wages, and possibly changes to unionization rates in Canada.
"We have a very talented pool of economic faculty within LCERPA," said Dr. Bill Morrison, director of the research centre and professor of Economics at Wilfrid Laurier University. "The newsletter will provide insights into the latest labour market data as well as highlight important issues in a way that is accessible for non-academics"
